Dear parents,
We have been very fortunate in the past week to have excellent guest speakers coming in to discuss science topics with the students. A special thank you to Alyssa the scientist who came in to discuss DNA and genetics and Dr. Rosenbaum who presented and answered many of the students questions about the human body. Today in science students have been learning about the human body through inquiry based questions. Students discussed "Is Groot (Guardians of the Galaxy movie) more animal or plant? We then connected this to "What similarities does Groot have to Humans? Could Groot survive on Earth?" It would be wonderful if you have the time to please discuss this inquiry question with you child. Their findings were very interesting! Thank you, Mrs. Claudio

Dear students, Next week Thursday is your math and science test. The math test will cover: Adding and subtracting decimals, long division and multiplication. The homework assigned this week is excellent review of these topic areas. The science will cover the digestive system. Below is the attachment to the study sheet. Students will be expected to: 1. Correctly spell the 9 key areas (please see the attachment) students have been given this study sheet today. 2. Students will be asked to label the human body with these 9 areas. 3. Describe what each area does. Thank you, Mrs.Claudio
Dear parents,
We are well on our with our human body unit! This term the science unit on the human body has us exploring the basic structures and functions of: · Circulatory and excretory systems · Respiratory and digestive systems · How the different body systems are interconnected We are looking for guest speakers who can do a presentation on any of these topic areas. If you have expertise in any of the human body areas we are studying, please email me at jclaudio@talmudtorah, we would love to have you in! Thank you, Jessie In addition to learning math concepts in our lessons everyday, students have started making connections to real world math!
Our unit emphasizes the application of mathematics to real-world situations. Numbers, skills, and mathematics concepts are not presented in isolation, but are linked to situations and contexts that are relevant to everyday life. Check out this cool video from 1959! Real world math is not a new concept! https://youtu.be/AJgkaU08VvY Support for Problem Solving Remind your child that problem solving takes time. It also takes perseverance. Encourage your child to use problem-solving strategies he/she is learning in school. For example:
Use question prompts to help your child discover a solution. For example:
Encourage your child to always check the accuracy of his/her work. By checking, your child will practise skills, build understanding, and become more self-reliant. Ask your child to explain why the solution is correct or incorrect. Talk aloud as you solve everyday problems of all kinds. Discuss alternative approaches and solutions with your child. Modelling how to solve a problem with your child will give your child more ideas and strategies. Our science test on the simple machines will be Tuesday Nov. 28th. The test will be asking students what the six simple machines are, the definition of each and 2 examples of each. Today in class students were given their study sheets and created their own study notes. Please ask your child to show you their study notes! Nighty review is strongly recommended. Below is the simple machines study sheet handed out in class today. Here are some great links to help you study! Quizlet https://quizlet.com/2424559/simple-machines-flash-cards/ Or try this game! https://www.msichicago.org/fileadmin/Activities/Games/simple_machines/ You can even watch a great video by Bill Nye all on simple machines:) https://youtu.be/VH9r1h3Cvp4 Thank you, Mrs. Claudio
This week we are starting our unit on long division. Students are still encouraged to practice their multiplication facts daily!
Please see this great video by Khan Academy to see how we are learning long division in class. The video also has links for additional practice. https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/arith-review-multiply-divide/arith-review-remainders/v/division-3-more-long-division-and-remainder-examples Students will also be bringing home division drills that can be used for daily practice (3 minute drills). Thank you:) Mrs.Claudio Dear parents,
In class we are focusing on multiplying 2 by 2 digit numbers. The homework that went home yesterday and due on Friday is on 2 by 2 multiplication. To see how we are learning them in class please see the link below. This video from the Khan Academy site is an excellent resource to use for all math concepts we are going to cover this year. Next week on Thursday we will be having a math test on multiplication with the focus on 2 by 2 digit multiplication. Additional practice sheets will be going home Friday for students who would like to more practice before their test. https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic-home/multiply-divide/multi-digit-mult/v/multiplying-2-digit-numbers Thank you for your support:) Sincerely, Mrs. Claudio Dear parents,
Making connections:) Today in class we had a wonderful discussion and introduction to Rube Goldberg. Please ask your child what they learned today. Here is a fun video we watched to help us connect simple machines to our curriculum. See if you can spot the 6 simple machines! https://youtu.be/23Hzq8BG2YE I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Sincerely, Mrs. Claudio Dear parents, We are off to a great start with our unit on simple machines! Today I introduced our exciting simple machines design project that will take place next week! The objectives are as follows and can also be found in the file below. PROJECT OVERVIEW
So what can we do to prepare for this IN CLASS lab? Students have been put into groups. Each group brainstormed ideas in class today and were given some research time to explore project ideas. Students have been asked to bring in recycled materials from home. Here are some ideas from the handout of what they can bring in:
All recycled items must be brought in by TUESDAY October 24th. Each student is only allowed to bring in 1 bag of recycled items. However... the one bag can be any size;) This project based learning experience is a design based lab. The outcome is for students to think critically, problem solve and work as a team. For these reasons please do not do the projects at home with your child! However healthy discussion and brainstorming is of course allowed. Have a wonderful long weekend! I am looking forward to an exciting week of design, problem solving and exploration. Sincerely, Mrs. Claudio
